PDF of Summary

Summary
30-50% of energy use in buildings and homes can be saved with more energy efficient HVAC and lighting systems, better insulation and windows, and better overall energy management. Many of these savings can be had with existing solutions with very fast payback periods (<24 months). Most owners do not realize these savings because it is difficult, expensive and time consuming to perform an energy audit – to date, all such services require an in-person visit from a energy efficiency or utility expert.

This project will aim to identify the market opportunity for an automated, software based energy audit system that does not require in-person energy audits.

Description of Technology
A software tool for the creation and calibration of building energy models has been developed as a research platform and for recommending energy conservation measures. Calibrated energy models are useful for identifying potentially cost-effective energy conservation measures (ECMs), but are typically time-intensive and expensive to create. This tool employs a simplified user interface to collect building and utility information and creates a calibrated DOE2i energy model quickly and with little required user interaction.

The software program has been developed to be flexible to different buildings and currently focuses on heating and cooling systems.

Stage of Progress
This is version 2.0 of the software and the new solution has been tested on a couple of case studies already.

While the software has been designed for research purposes, we believe the solution can be adapted to a commercial setting easily.
